GLT Web Cam
A family of GLTs is spending the summer free ranging in the Zoo's Beaver Valley. The father is Eduardo, the mother is Laranja, and two sets of twins, one born last November, and the other born in late May 2007. Gisela and Samba, the twins born in March 2006 and were free-ranging last summer, are at the age when they leave the family group. They will remain at the Small Mammal House this summer.
The tails of the tails of the adults and older twins were dyed to help volunteer watchers identify them when the monkeys are in the trees.
Learn how we tell which GLT is which. The older tamarins are wearing radio collars so scientists can track them when they go out of sight. If the tamarins wander too far, scientists can sound a recorded tamarin call near the nest box to attract the monkeys back to Beaver Valley.
The free-ranging tamarins will be given plenty of food, left in many places to encourage them to forage and explore. Some food will be left in hanging trays, some put in tubes with small holes, and some hidden in crevices. Tamarins' long slender fingers and arms are made for probing into small spaces. And the location of the food will be changed often to keep the tamarins exploring.
The camera below shows the inside of the tamarins' nest box. They can go outside whenever they want, so if you don't see them now, look for them later.

Watching golden lion tamarins:
You are viewing an enclosure in the Zoo's Small Mammal House where a pair of golden lion tamarins (GLTs) lives. Tune in Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Eastern Time to see the GLTs get an enrichment item. You may see other animals that live here too, such as a pair of saki monkeys, sloths, or an acouchi. There are only about 1,500 GLTs in the wild. For decades, Zoo scientists have collaborated with conservation organizations to help save from extinction these endangered monkeys.
