Animals in the Sky

Saturday, July 19, 9 a.m. - 2 P.M.

Take a journey to the stars without leaving the Zoo!
The Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum’s mobile planetarium is coming to the Zoo’s Visitor Center for an out-of-this-world event. Enter the inflatable dome for a 15 – 20 minute narrated presentation that will guide guests through animal themed constellations. Then, embark on a scavenger hunt through the Zoo to find animals found in popular constellations.

Event Details:

  • Presentations will run from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and last 15 – 20 minutes
  • Groups will be formed with approximately 25 people for each show

Additional Activities
(activities will run the entire event time):

  • Solar telescope viewing with volunteers from SI Air and Space Museum and Northern Virginia Astronomy Club and National Capital Astronomers
  • Scavenger hunt, ranging from Asia Trail Sloth Bear exhibit to Great Cats Exhibit, to observe and collect information about Zoo animals found in popular constellations observed in the night sky
  • Arts and crafts activities in the Visitor Center for families involving building paper telescopes, star necklaces, themed bookmarks, and more
  • Storytelling about animals and animal constellations in the Asia Trail Gift Shop
  • Star-themed cookies for purchase at Sodexo’s locations and Visitor Center
  • Related toys and products available for purchase in Asia Trail Gift Shop

Please note: No strollers are permitted inside the planetarium. There will be stroller parking, but because the dome is inflated it cannot be opened during the show. Space is limited.
