2007 Calendar of Activities and Entertainment

ZooLights featured lots of fun activities and entertainment for 25 nights. Some activities were held every night, and some occurred once a week. A different choir or theater group took the main stage, near Lion/Tiger Hill, each week. Get all the details below.

    Munch this sweet-and-salty popcorn made before your eyes.

  • Meet a Keeper
    Get to know a Zoo keeper and some of the animals they care for. Keeper talks will vary throughout the 25 nights.
  • ZooLights Wild Winter Search
    From hibernation to migration, learn about how animals cope in the winter with this scavenger hunt.
  • Follow My Tracks
    Match a variety of animals to their tracks in the snow.

    Make bird treats to hang in your yard.

    Cookie Decorating
    Decorate and take home a large animal cookie.
    Build a Winter Animal Habitat
    Learn what makes a great winter home for giant pandas and other animals at the Zoo, then try your hand at creating a model habitat.
    Book Signing
    Don Moore, the Zoo's Associate Director of Animal Care will sign copies of his children's book Disney’s Wonderful World of Animals. This book will be available for purchase.

    Ice Carving Demonstration
    Watch award-winning chefs carve animal and animal-related scenes.

Entertainment on the Main Stage

  • November 28–December 2
    Evergreen Theatre performs A Midwinter’s Tail, a new play written just for the National Zoo about how animals cope with winter. Enjoy musical theater and audience participation as this Canadian troupe brings conservation messages to young audiences.
  • December 5–9
    Flumpa and Friends LIVE! “The Science of Winter”
    Flumpa, a six-foot-six blue-eyed tree frog and his creator, Wendy Whitten, “The Singing Scientist,” present a family adventure that combines music, physical movement, and colorful sets with science fun facts.
  • December 12–16
    In Classika Theatre's performance of Peter and the Wolf, children watch the stage and imaginatively match instruments with characters in the story.
  • December 19–23
    December 19: Alice Deal Concert Choir and Alice Deal Show Choir (6:30 p.m.); Children of the Congressional Schools of Virginia in Falls Church (7 p.m.)
    December 20: The Maret School Madrigals (6:30 p.m.); Renaissance Revelers Madrigal Ensemble (7 p.m. at Lemur Island); Oxon Hill High School Vocal Music Department (7:30 p.m.)
    December 21: The Orioles (6:30 and 7:30 p.m.)
    December 22: Colonial Forge High School Chambers Winds (6:30 p.m.); The Christmas Singers (7:30 p.m.)
