Giant Anteater Mother and Baby

On March 12, 2009, a giant anteater was born at the National Zoo. This is only the second giant anteater to be born here in the history of the Zoo. Animal care staff and veterinarians had been closely monitoring mother Maripi for six months, performing weekly ultrasounds and other diagnostics. At the baby's exam in April, staff learned that the pup is male. In a public vote, he was named Cyrano. In January 2010, he left for his new home at the Nashville Zoo
