Raising Clouded Leopards

Staff at the Zoo’s Front Royal, Virginia, facility are hand-rearing two male clouded leopards born on February 14, 2010.

Zoo staff have become experts in hand-rearing these endangered cats in our collaborative clouded leopard breeding and research program in Thailand at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo. To date, 33 cubs have been hand-reared in Thailand. Our staff know just what to feed them, how much, and how often. And they know what a healthy temperature is, how quickly the cubs should gain weight, and when they should reach milestones, such as opening their eyes. Find out how the cubs are doing!

May 14

The cubs now weigh 5.7 and 5.6 pounds.

March 12

The cubs now weigh 23 and 21 ounces. They are almost able to walk and are beginning to play with one another. The incubator was lowered to 78 degrees and will soon be at room temperature. At that point we will be able to move them into a larger enclosure. Baby food will soon be added to their milk formula to begin the transition to solid food. These cubs are a bit smaller than the first two at this age but have been gaining weight recently. We expect them to catch up in the coming weeks.

March 7

The cubs are now four weeks old and have doubled in size since their birth. One is darker and growing a little faster than the lighter colored one. The darker one weighs 19 ounces, the lighter one weighs 18 ounces. The day they were born, the darker one weighed 9.1 ounces, and the lighter one was about nine ounces. They're on the verge of walking and can take several tentative steps before falling down.
