We need your help to name the chick! In honor of the kiwi’s native New Zealand homeland, we offer three Maori names from which you can choose. The Maori are the native people of New Zealand. Keepers here selected names that reflect the chick’s lively demeanor.

A male North Island brown kiwi hatched at the National Zoo on March 7. This is just the third kiwi to hatch at the Zoo. The first kiwi to hatch outside of New Zealand hatched here in 1975.
The national bird of New Zealand, this endangered species is one of five kiwi species, all of which are flightless and unique to New Zealand.
