Kids' Adopt

Thanks to everyone who voted to name the male giant panda cub, born at the National Zoo on July 9. More than 200,000 votes were cast for the following names:

  • Hua Sheng ("China Washington" and "magnificent")
  • Sheng Hua ("Washington China" and "magnificent")
  • Tai Shan ("peaceful mountain")
  • Long Shan ("dragon mountain")
  • Qiang Qiang ("strong, powerful")

On October 17, when the cub was 100 days old, the winning name was announced: Tai Shan. See a photo gallery of the cub.

Congratulations to Rod Sallee of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He was selected from a random drawing of voters. He received a private visit with the giant panda family during a tour of the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat, along with a Fujifilm digital camera, and a gift bag from Animal Planet.
