Updates From the Zoo's Lion Keepers: Another Exam and Time Together

November 3

For the second day in a row, Shera, Naba and their seven cubs were together in the dens today. Everything's going really well. Shera has nursed and groomed Naba's cubs, who are learning how to play and wrestle from their older cousins. Naba's been a little defensive, growling and hissing, but isn't bothered by the presence of Shera or her cubs. Shera's male cub seems to be the pioneer—he's tasted his mother's food and tried to drink from her water dish.

All seven cubs had an exam on Monday and got vaccinations. They're all doing great and are growing fast. It now takes two of us to hold a cub during an exam because they do not want to hold still! As of today, they weigh between 16 and 20.5 pounds each. Naba's cubs have doubled their weight in four weeks. Shera's cubs haven't quite tripled their weight in six weeks.
