On the morning of Friday, February 25, keeper staff noticed that one of the cubs—Fahari—was favoring her right rear leg. Given the amount of time the cubs spend wrestling around, it is likely that she injured her leg during play. There did not appear to be any major damage (the leg didn’t look broken or swollen) and she was bearing weight on it.
Keepers and veterinarians decided that the best course of action was to keep her inside and watch her closely for a couple of days in the hopes that she would feel better and show signs of improvement after the weekend. Unfortunately, she continued to favor that leg noticeably after the weekend and so Zoo staff opted to give her an exam.
We will post another update soon when we have a good, clear picture of what is going on with this little one, but for now this looks like a case of “cubs will be cubs.” We will continue to monitor Fahari closely, which means that she will be kept inside—so that she doesn’t rough house outside with the others and aggravate her leg—until she begins to show some improvement.
When visiting the lions or watching them on the web cam, you will likely notice that there are only a few cubs outside with the adults at a time. That’s because we are keeping some companions in with Fahari throughout the day. We’ll be sure to keep you posted!

Fahari is pretty much back to being her old self again, and is happily going outside with her siblings!
