On August 31, 2011, four of the Zoo's lions—John, Lelie, Fahari, and Zuri—turned one year old! On September 22, 2011, the Zoo's other young lions—Baruti, Aslan, and Lusaka—turn one year old! People from around the world have watched Shera's and Naba's offspring grow and mature by tuning into our 
web cams, checking out our 
photos and keeper updates, and visiting the Zoo.
Thanks to everyone who posted a birthday wish for the lions, shared a photo on our 
Facebook page, or came to the young lions' special birthday enrichment on September 16.

I wish that one of the boys could be adopted by the Pittsburgh Zoo. They lost their male lion last spring. The zoo isn't the same without him and their old female looks so lonely. It probably won't be long until she dies too. Its all so sad.

We visited the zoo last Nov just to see you, but the cubs weren't on display yet. We did see Luke, Naba and Shera. It has been absorbing and wonderful to sit three thousand miles away and watch you growing up, in the photos and by the webcams. I was in DC in September 2010 when you were tiny or just born. As a cat owner who has a "pride" of her own - 3 adults and 5 kittens, I have loved watching the progress of the cubs. It's not only entertaining to watch them on webcam, but also educational to see their actions. I'm sure that they will eventually be split up, but want to get a chance to see them in person. Happy birthday cubs!! You are so adorable!! We hope you get many meatballs and more for your birthday!! A big thank you to the lion keepers and the zoo for the web cams, allowing the whole world to see the amazing lives of a lion pride! I definately second the idea someone posted of setting up a donation fund to fix the outside web cam, especially considering that the cubs will be sent to other zoos (boo hoo) and people should be able to enjoy them ouside while they are still here!

It's hard to believe that a whole year has passed since the night I watched Shera become a mother, over the webcam...and then again three weeks later when Naba became a mother!
