Celebrating National Alpaca Farm Days

On September 25 and 26, farms and breeders across the country celebrated National Alpaca Farm Days. At Kids’ Farm, we celebrated by letting visitors touch and work with fleece shorn from our very own alpacas, and teaching them how to turn this raw fiber into yarn and felt, as well as the basics of knitting. Visitors could see the volume and feel the weight of the eight pounds of fleece that come off each alpaca when they are shorn in the spring. Keepers helped make the weekend special with talks about caring for the three alpacas at Kids’ Farm, training demonstrations, and taking the alpacas out to Olmsted Walk so visitors could see the animals up close and touch them.
