Heritage
Mallard ducks are the ancestor of nearly all domestic ducks.
Duck vision
Because ducks' eyes are on the sides of their head, they can see almost all the way around without having to turn.
Dabbling
The way many ducks eat is called "dabbling." They eat plants and insects near the surface of the water by dipping their head into the water, which makes their tail stick straight up.
Wild cousins
Ducks are in the family
Anatidae, which includes swans and geese. At the National Zoo, you can see hundreds of birds from around the world, like these duck relatives: nene, hooded merganser, trumpeter swan, and Australian shelduck.
