Start with fresh tomatoes
Tomatoes are green when they start to grow. We pick them when they are red and plump.
Then add garlic
The part we eat, the bulb, is underground. The long, thin leaves sprout from the ground. When the leaves turn brown, it's time to dig up the garlic.
And some herbs
Basil, thyme, and oregano leaves—fresh or dried—add flavor and a little color to the sauce. When the plants start flowering, or before, you can pick the leaves.

Simple Tomato Sauce
- Cook garlic in oil.
- Stir in tomatoes, basil, thyme, and oregano.
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer.
