Black-tailed Prairie Dog

Prairie dogs are not really dogs; they are rodents. Prairie dogs create complex underground communities called “towns” that have elaborate tunnel systems and chambers. A typical dog town can cover 100 acres and is divided into neighborhoods, or “wards,” which are further divided into coteries—family groups made of one male, one to four females and their young.
