All species of gibbon are endangered because of the destruction to their habitat—tropical and subtropical rainforests of Southeast Asia—for logging and agriculture. Commercial trade is prohibited. Many adults are killed so humans can have an infant gibbon as a pet. Only four percent of their habitat is protected.

Organizations such as Conservation International and World Wildlife Fund work to protect habitat for gibbons and other endangered species.
