November 10 Update From a Great Ape House Keeper

Kibibi’s First Halloween

Here at the National Zoo, Halloween is an extended celebration. We had several events this year over the course of two weeks: Boo at the Zoo (three nights of trick-or-treating for kids), Night of the Living Zoo (an adults-only Halloween event), and Halloween itself! This meant many days of the apes receiving spooky treats and decorations.

On Halloween, the rain finally subsided so Kibibi (who turned ten months old today) and her family were able to go out into the gorilla yard to find their very own pumpkins. Kibibi seemed very interested in this novel treat and watched as her mom munched on her baked pumpkin. She even got a taste of some pulp and a seed or two.

As the weather continues to cool and the holidays arrive, gorilla keepers will continue with the celebrations. Over the next few months, Kibibi’s big brothers Kojo and Kwame will have birthdays (Kojo will turn eight, Kwame will turn ten), Thanksgiving will be filled with cranberries and pumpkin “pie,” Christmas means lots of presents to unwrap, and of course Kibibi’s first birthday is quickly coming up as well. We can’t wait to experience many more firsts with the Zoo’s youngest gorilla.
