Four Sumatran-Bornean hybrid orangutans and two Bornean orangutans live at the Great Ape House and Think Tank. They have the option of traveling the 400-foot
(130 m) O Line between the two buildings (pictured below). The male hybrid is Kiko, and the female hybrids are,
Bonnie, Iris, and Lucy, who arrived in early 2005. A male named Kyle and a female named Batang are the two Bornean orangutans, who joined the others in the Great Ape House in November 2004.

Batang - female She weighs about 110 pounds and has white circles around her eyes. She is bold and curious, often studying the operating mechanisms of the doors and walls of her enclosures. Batang and Kyle came to the Zoo in November 2004 as part of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan for orangutans. If all goes well, Batang may become pregnant in the next two or three years. |

Bonnie – female Bonnie, a hybrid, was born in December 1976 at the Albuquerque Zoo and was nursery reared. She came to the Zoo in December 1980. She is the mother of Kiko. She travels the O Line. Distinguishing features Bonnie has a large belly, a bulbous forehead, and a dark coat, closer to burgundy than orange. She weighs 160 pounds and is larger than Iris. |

Iris – female Iris, a hybrid, was born at the Zoo on April 15, 1987, to Pensi and Junior and was reared by her mother. She often travels the O Line. She is named for the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) because of her birthday. Distinguishing features Iris is lighter in color and has longer hair over her forehead. Her hair is smooth and glossy. |

Kiko – male Kiko, a hybrid, was born at the Zoo in November 1987 to Bonnie and Junior and was mother-reared. He and his mother are owned by the Albuquerque Zoo. He often brachiates (hanging and swinging with his arms) as he travels the O Line. Distinguishing features Kiko weighs 240 pounds and is a full grown male with cheek pads, a beard, and long hair. |

Kyle - male Kyle weighs about 110 pounds and is a growing male. He has a lot of freckles around his neck and throat sac. Batang and Kyle came to the Zoo in November 2004 as part of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan for orangutans. If all goes well, Batang may become pregnant in the next two or three years. |

Lucy - female At more than 200 pounds, Lucy is overweight. She will be put on a diet to return to a healthy weight. She is very clever and engaging. She has had a lot of human interaction and positive reinforcement training. |
Zoo Diet
In the morning, each group is fed all together. Food items are cut up and spread over a wide area. In the afternoon, individuals are separated so each animal gets its share of preferred food items.
