Everglades ratsnake The Everglades ratsnake is also called the orange ratsnake because of its coloring. Adult ratsnakes can range in color from yellow to red to black, with gray longitudinal stripes. Everglades ratsnakes have orange eyes. They are relatively large, as ratsnakes go, often reaching lengths of up to five feet. These ratsnakes are skilled swimmers and are also able to climb trees. Everglades ratsnakes feed on rodents and birds in the wild. Female ratsnakes generally lay clutches of six to 30 eggs between May and July. Hatchlings emerge about two months after the eggs are laid. ![]() © MSA 2005 Range: southern Florida, U.S. Habitat: grasslands and wetlands
