Lizard Defense
More than half of all reptiles are lizards.
Smaller lizards try to avoid being eaten by hiding, blending in, or running away.

Lizard Surprises
Some lizards surprise predators by doing something unexpected.
The northern blue-tonged skink sticks out its tongue at predators.
The appearance of its strikingly colored tongue contrasted with red mouth, and accompanied by a hiss, is often enough to scare away a threatening bird or reptile. Learn more about the blue-tongued skink.
Many lizards, such as the leopard gecko, have a breakaway tail. When a would-be predator grabs hold of the gecko's tail, the tail will break off so the gecko can run for safety. Learn more about the leopard gecko.
