Intern and Volunteer Opportunities
General Information:
The National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center (CRC)
is a 3,200-acre facility located in Front Royal, Virginia.
The Smithsonian Institution's mission is to promote
conservation of biological diversity by:
The CRC maintains breeding populations of endangered wildlife from around the world, including the Przewalski's horse, scimitar-horned oryx, clouded leopard, and Guam rail. These species are maintained by curatorial, animal keeper, and veterinary staff, and are the subjects of scientific studies conducted by behavioral ecologists, reproductive physiologists, and population geneticists.
With increased concern for these rare species and their management in both captive and natural environments, the CRC has established an intern program. This program focuses on the management of captive endangered species and the study of threatened species within their natural habitats. Interns work with zoo biologists, veterinarians, and wildlife professionals, while earning academic credits, if desired.
The CRC intern position requires a minimum commitment of ten weeks. You may apply for an internship based upon your specific goals. If you are interested in assisting with various CRC projects on a periodic basis, you can apply to be a FONZ/CRC Club Volunteer.
