Johanna Choo
Post-doc Fellow

JohannaJohanna’s interest in biological research began her very first year as a biology undergraduate in Singapore. Her undergraduate research included a range of subjects, from forest and mangrove bird ecology, to plant taxonomy, pitcher plant ecology, entomology and botany. Her undergraduate experience made her realize that she was more inclined toward ecological research that involved the study of relationships between tropical animals and the plants that they feed on. Therefore, during her dissertation research she conducted a comparative study of avian frugivory and fruit ecology in Sarawak and Peru.

Her love of travel and tropical ecology has brought her to remote locales during her undergraduate and graduate career. To date, she has conducted ecological research in the Asian Paleotropics and the Neotropics: Singapore, Malaysia, Borneo, Costa Rica, Panama, and Peru.

Johanna has a B.S. in biology and a B.S. Honors degree in botany from the National University of Singapore. She earned her doctorate in ecology from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Prior to joining MAB, she worked for one year as an Assistant Professor in Environmental Science at William Paterson University in New Jersey.

Johanna believes that international perspectives and comparative studies are important for our understanding of the world’s tropical ecosystems and the conservation of these globally threatened habitats. She is very excited to be working with MAB on animal frugivory, fruit diversity, and habitat use in Gabon. This new project will be her first experience working in African continent.
