Nile hippo This course presents a full range of tools used in conservation biology. It has been specially designed for early career conservation managers and researchers to gain an understanding of tools, protocols, and methodologies currently available. This course will serve as the foundation for future in-depth training courses on specific topics.

October 16: Project framework and planning; overview of tools; defining objectives; processing existing knowledge
October 17: Establishing project priorities; information gaps; social and legislative framework
October 18: Experimental design, statistics, and data management
October 19: Data analysis; policy
October 20: Computer tools: GIS, GPS, technology, and software
October 21: Lab tools: genetics
October 22: Day off
October 23: Field tools: radio telemetry, mark and recapture, camera traps
October 24: Field day
October 25: Field tools: monitoring and assessment
October 26: Field tools: restoration and mitigation
October 27: Social and industrial topics
October 28: Community involvement, education, final presentations
October 29: Departure

The course is limited to 20 participants. Applications are taken on a first come, first-served basis.

Cost

$2,750, includes course fees, room and board, and materials. Airfare, travel from Nairobi Airport to Mpala (expect $300 for round-trip flight and ground transportation), and insurance are not included.
