Field Assistants Needed

Participate in a long-term ecological study of forest bird populations at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Current National Science Foundation funded research under the direction of Nicholas Rodenhouse, Scott Sillett, Mike Webster, and Richard Holmes focuses on effects of climatic variation on bird distribution and abundance along an elevational gradient.

Two types of positions are available: bird survey technician (we need 4) and warbler demography technician (we need 10).

Qualifications

  • Good color vision
  • Tolerance of black flies and mosquitoes
  • Able to work alone and hike in remote, rugged, and steep terrain
  • Interest in avian behavioral and population ecology
  • Bird survey: able to identify New England forest birds by sight and sound; previous bird survey experience preferred
  • Warbler demography: experience in finding and monitoring passerine nests; people with proficiency at banding and collecting blood from small birds are especially needed

Term of Appointment

The project will last 10-12 weeks, starting in early to mid-May.

$350-$400 per week, depending on experience

Location

Housing in NH The project is based in Campton, New Hampshire.

Lakeside housing adjacent to White Mountain National Forest, Internet access, and utilities will be provided.

Many opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and birdwatching can be found in the immediate area.
