2012 Dates

  • 5th–6th grade: July 8–July 14
  • 7th–8th grade (first session): July 15–July 21
  • 7th–8th grade (second session): July 22–July 28
  • 9th–10th grade (two-week session): July 29–August 11

Age groups are determined by the grade level your child will be entering in the fall.

Fees

A current FONZ Household membership (or higher level) is required to participate. You can become a member or upgrade your membership during the registration process or join FONZ or upgrade now. Full payment is required with registration.

  • One-week session: $795
  • Two-week session: $1,595

Capacity

The maximum is 52 campers per week and a ratio of one staff member per six campers.

Staff

Staff is certified in Red Cross Basic First Aid and CPR. At least one staff member is a certified lifeguard. All staff have experience teaching children in an outdoor setting.

Location

Overnight camps are held at the Zoo’s Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. SCBI Front Royal is about 70 miles from Washington, D.C. 

Accommodations

Campers sleep four per room in air-conditioned dormitories. Boys and girls stay in separate wings, each with its own bathroom. Bathrooms contain individual shower and toilet stalls. Campers may request only one roommate. See your confirmation package for details.

Food

Food is provided by a local caterer. Vegetarian options are available at every meal.

Transportation

Parents are responsible for transportation to and from camp. Directions will be mailed with confirmation package.

About Registration

With our registration system for camps and classes, all participants must create an account to register. You will need your FONZ member ID ready during the process. This new system enables you to register multiple children at once, view your account online, and make payments. Also, nonmembers can join FONZ during the registration process.

Confirmation Package

Upon receipt of registration, we will send you a confirmation email containing directions, a packing list, and orientation information. Required medical forms will be mailed to registrants prior to the start of the camp session. 

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel, notify the FONZ Summer Safari Office in writing or via email at least four weeks before the session(s) for which your child is registered to receive a 75-percent refund. No refunds or changes will be made thereafter.
