Spring Safari Day Camp

A WILD NATURE EXPLORATION FOR CHILDREN IN GRADES K-5

Spring is in the air, but flowers aren't the only things blooming. So are new programs at the National Zoo! Join us this spring break for FONZ’s Spring Safari Day Camp!

SpringSafari campers will explore the lives, habitats, and conservation of animals around the world. Week-long sessions include exciting hands-on activities, lessons, craft projects, science experiments, and walks through the Zoo. (There is no direct contact with animals and campers do not participate in animal care.)

NEW in 2015: American Camp Association policy updates require that we collect the following information at the time of registration. Please have this information available at the time of registration.

  • your family's medical insurance carrier name and policy number
  • the date of your child's last tetanus shot

Registration Dates

FONZ Premier Plus Registration begins on Tuesday, January 27 at 10 a.m.
All FONZ Member Registration begins on Tuesday, February 3 at 10 a.m.
Registration for non-members begins on February 10 at 10 a.m.

Ages

Campers are grouped into two grade levels: K-2 and 3-5. Spring Safari Day Camp is not offered at the pre-K level. Children may only be registered for their current grade level.

Dates and Times

Spring Camp is offered for three weeklong sessions:

  • March 30 – April 3;
  • April 7 – 10 (no camp on Monday, April 6 - Easter Monday); and
  • April 13 - 17.
Camp is held from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Campers must be dropped off between 8:45 and 9 a.m. A limited number of spots are available in Before-Camp Care from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and in After-Camp Care from 3 to 6 p.m.

Camp Descriptions

Grades K-2

New to the Zoo!

Who's new at the Zoo? Chicks, cubs, tadpoles and bison, too! Come meet our newest arrivals and learn about the animals who share their habitats. Old friends and new campers are welcome to join the fun!

Grades 3-5

Jr. Zoologist

Our Jr. Zoologists will explore the Zoo from the Connecticut Avenue to Rock Creek, from the biggest elephant to the tiniest frog. Discover our most endangered animals and learn about the National Zoo's efforts to keep them safe. This camp is sure to be wild! (Campers do not come in direct contact with live animals or assist with animal care)

Fees

Camp fee includes a Spring Safari Day Camp baseball cap, daily snack with juice box, and a ride on the Speedwell Foundation Conservation Carousel.

Five-day Sessions (March 30 – April 3; April 13 – 17)

  • Members: $400
  • Non-Members: $500

Four-day Session (April 7 – 10, no camp on Easter Monday)

  • Members: $320
  • Non-Members: $400

Before-Camp Care: Available from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Cost is $100 per session (or $80 for the four-day session).

After-Camp Care: Available from 3 to 6 p.m. An additional fee will be charged after 6 p.m. Cost is $175 per session (or $140 for the four-day session).

Locations

Drop-off for all camps is in the Visitor Center Auditorium. After gathering with their teachers and classmates, campers will be led to their classroom in the Visitor Center.

Campers in After-Camp Care must be picked up in Visitor Center classrooms. You must show photo identification when picking up your camper at dismissal or in After-Camp Care.

About Registration

With our registration system, all participants must have an online account. You will need your FONZ member ID number and the 2015 discount code to receive the member rate. This system enables you to register multiple children at once, view your account online, and make payments.

Cancellation and Transfer Policies

Cancellation requests received at least four weeks prior to the start of the session will receive a 75-percent refund. Transfer requests received at least four weeks prior to the start of the session will be charged a 10-percent administrative fee. Please emailthe FONZ Safari Day Camp Office with cancellation and transfer requests. No refunds or changes will be made for less than four weeks' notice.
