Spring Safari Day Camp

Put a spring in your step and make some new buds at FONZ’s Spring Safari Day Camp! There’s no better way to spend your spring break than with Friends of the National Zoo! Spring Safari campers will explore the lives and habitats of animals around the world and learn about ongoing conservation efforts to protect them. Weeklong sessions include exciting hands-on activities, craft projects, science experiments, and walks through the Zoo (but no direct contact with animals).

Ages: Campers are grouped into three grade levels: K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. Spring Safari Day Camp is not offered at the pre-K level. Children may only be registered for their current grade level.


Spring Camp is offered for one weeklong session from April 14-18, 2014. This full-day camp is held from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Campers must be dropped off between 8:45 and 9 a.m. Before-Camp Care is available for a limited number of campers each week. Before-Camp Care takes place in the Visitor Center from 8 to 8:45 a.m. After-Camp Care is available for a limited number of campers each week. After-Camp Care takes place in the Visitor Center classrooms from 3 to 6 p.m.


Drop-off for all camps is in the Visitor Center Auditorium. After gathering with their teachers and classmates, campers will be led to their classroom. Please pick up campers in Parking Lot A. Campers in After-Camp Care must be picked up in Visitor Center classrooms. NEW for 2014: you must show photo identification when picking up your camper at dismissal or in After-Camp Care.


Camp fee includes a Spring Safari Day Camp baseball cap, daily snack with juice box, and a ride on the new Speedwell Foundation Conservation Carousel.

Five-day session, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: $380 members/$475 non-members

Before-camp care, 8-8:45 a.m.: $100 per week

After-camp care, 3-6 p.m.: $175 per week


Cancellation requests received at least four weeks prior to the start of the session will receive a 75-percent refund. Transfer requests received at least four weeks prior to the start of the session will be charged a 10-percent administrative fee. Please email FONZ_programs@si.edu the FONZ Safari Day Camp Office with cancellation and transfer requests. No refunds or changes will be made for less than four weeks’ notice.

Creature Features

Come meet a group of zoo animals that are experts at the game of hide and seek. Spots, stripes, and colors help some animals find dinner and keep others from being on the menu. Learn how critters hide from predators and search for prey.

Where the Wild Things Are

A wonderful world unfolds in this five-day investigation of the animal kingdom. Each day, study a different type of animal including mammals, birds, and reptiles, and learn about the wild places they inhabit.

Grades 2-3

Dr. Zoo-euss

Turtles, elephants, and tigers, too. Where can you find them? At the National Zoo! You’re sure to have a fabulous time, making crafts and reading rhymes. So come to the park, take a look, and visit an animal from a Dr. Seuss book!

Extreme Animal Athletes

Animals are built for survival. They can live deep in the sea, high in the sky, or in the driest desert. Learn about the amazing adaptations that make these animals winners.

Grades 4-5

Junior Marine Biologist

From sea lions and otters to octopods and crabs, marine biologists dive in to investigate. Discover the Zoo’s bubbliest animals and learn about the National Zoo’s efforts to keep them safe. This class is sure to be a splash!
