A computer application that allows schools to manage data obtained from a Biodiversity Monitoring Project plot.
Data on trees within a one-hectare (100 meters by 100 meters square) plot are entered using x/y coordinates,
and includes species and size of each tree.
Once the data are entered in the Forest Plotter program, schools can generate plot maps and simple statistics on the plot,
which allows students to easily see patterns in their data.
See box to right to download.
Sharing Data
Schools are encouraged to download data from other partners to compare results and to experience different habitats, flora, and fauna.
Compressed (.zip) data files can be downloaded from the box to the right, site descriptions of the schools are also available.
Instructions
- Launch the application and open one of the supplied examples; play with it if you'd like.
- Once a database has been created you can study the entire plot using tree totals, species counts, and biodiversity indices.
- You can also focus your searches so you can study one species of tree, or inspect specific quadrants within the plot.
- The plot can be saved as a text (.txt) file, and shared over the Internet with others using Forest Plotter.
- Data can be converted to Microsoft Excel format for further analyses
