We believe that students can and should be involved in the process of forming questions about the natural world and be actively engaged in seeking answers.

Students begin authentic inquiry by looking for patterns within their monitoring plot.

The next step is to engage them in using the scientific process to observe patterns, formulate questions, gather new data, interpret results and share their conclusions.

The plots can be used to monitor various aspects of the ecosystem, depending on the overall goals and priorities of the local partners.

Students and community members may choose to monitor vegetation, tree composition, or populations of birds, small mammals, large mammals, amphibians, and insects to better understand and study the health of the ecosystem.
