Tadpole to Frog

Statement:
girl catching tadpoleThe student will investigate and understand that plants and animals undergo a series of orderly changes in their life cycles. Key concepts include some animals (frogs and butterflies) undergo distinct stages during their lives while others generally resemble their parents.

Curriculum Standards:
Virginia Science SOL 2.4a

Objective:
The student will observe the progressive changes in the frog’s life cycle.

Materials:
Magnifying glasses, net, cups

Procedure:
1) In the fall, introduce students to the biodiversity plot and have them look for adult frogs in the area. Tell the students what they will do in the spring.
2) Spring, again look for frog eggs in the plot.
3) Use books, computers, video to study life cycle
4) Weekly visits to the plot to monitor growth and record in journals through writing and art.

Assessment:
Journals, circle graph (picturing life cycle discussions)

Additional Ideas:
1) Music teacher will use songs and creative movement
2) Students can estimate how long it will take eggs to turn into adult. Compare at end to see how close their estimates were.
