¡Bienvenidos!

Welcome to the Columbia Heights Community Science Workshop, where inquisitive minds explore the wonders of science.

Who are we?

The Columbia Heights Community Science Workshop (CHCSW) is a program that provides science outreach to underserved audiences in the communities of Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods. It is a partnership between the National Zoo and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. We are also part of “Celebra la Ciencia”, a coalition of organizations formed by Acceso Hispano to increase the participation of Hispanics in science and health education programs.

CHCSW exists within a national network of 12 Community Science Workshops. It is overseen by the Zoo’s Department of Conservation Biology and is staffed by Smithsonian scientists and educators.

Where are we?

CHCSW operates out of the Environmental Monitoring Lab in the Amazonia Science Gallery and the Department of Conservation Biology at the National Zoo. The Columbia Heights Community Science Workshop was previously situated in the heart of the Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant community at 1479-B Columbia Road NW, Washington, D.C.

What do we offer?

The Community Science Workshop offers hands-on science activities for youth in the community, including:

  • Formal science labs
  • Informal after-school activities at local schools and community organizations
  • Science outreach at community festivals
  • Student career training

Community Outreach

CHCSW staff and participants host tables at festivals and special events where they engage the public in learning about environmental history, science, and health.

CHCSW has reached out to the community at events such as the Zoo’s Fiesta Musical and Autumn Conservation Festival, the Telemundo Feria de la Familia, the Adams Morgan Day Festival, the Taste of Arlington, North American Wildlife Celebration, and Fiesta DC.
