What is the Environmental Monitoring Laboratory (EML)?

Rock Creek on a snowy day The EML is the home base of an educational program that:
  • collects baseline data on water quality in Rock Creek in Washington, D.C.
  • provides internships so students can learn the protocols and methods of environmental science and education
  • houses both qualitative and quantitative environmental monitoring tools
  • conducts teacher training on methods for measuring water quality
  • serves as an environmental site for school group visits

Methods:

The EML uses two methods to determine water quality:
  1. Chemical test - colorimetric Lamotte kit which provides a range of color indicators of specific variables
