National Zoo Receives Two AZA Awards

Research in Preservation of Genetic Diversity and Development of Clouded Leopard Breeding Program Funded

The National Zoo was recently awarded funding for research from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. The AZA Conservation Endowment Fund awarded two of the 18 selected proposals to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

"Comparison of Population Management Strategies for Preserving Genetic Diversity in Groups,” submitted by Jon Ballou of the National Zoo and Brandie Smith of AZA received $11,870 for their research. Katharine Pelican and JoGayle Howard of the National Zoo and Nadja Wielebnowski of the Brookfield Zoo were awarded $20,000 for their research on “Developing a Successful Clouded Leopard Breeding Program in Thailand.”

The AZA Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF) provides financial support for regional and international field conservation programs, the improvement of training and development opportunities for zoological professionals, and other key programs related to the Association's mission.
