Tracking Silver Moon

Animated Map

Silver Moon, a wild Asian elephant, was captured in December of 2002. A Myanmar and American research team attached a satellite GPS collar to Silver Moon and monitor her and her herd's movements until August 5, 2004, when the collar's battery died.

Myanmar's elephants have become rare and using satellite tracking allows Zoo researchers to gain ecological and behavioral data that is essential for their protection.

The animation illustrates Silver Moon's movements throughout the length of the project.
