Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Opportunities and Training
The National Zoo’s Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) provides a variety of training and capacity building programs for undergraduate, graduate, and professional audiences, specifically targeting individuals and institutions from developing countries and underserved communities.
SCBI staff and research associates have taught training courses in the United States and at more than 20 international locations on a variety of topics for over three decades. More than 5,000 individuals from more than 85 countries have taken part in such efforts.
SCBI is developing new courses and revising previous courses to improve their applicability to current conservation challenges. Check out our graduate and professional courses and certificates to learn more.
Along with the expansion of course offerings, a new training facility is being constructed at SCBI in Front Royal, Virginia.

The Smithsonian Conservation biology Institute and George Mason University host an extraordinary residential semester program for junior- and senior-level undergraduate students to learn about conservation first-hand. Participants can earn 16 credit hours through the Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Program.

Individual courses and certificate programs are available to graduate students and professionals in the United States and abroad. A new conservation curriculum, offering graduate credit, continuing education units and professional certificates, is being introduced through the Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Program. | Global Tiger Initiative | |

The Global Tiger Initiative–Conservation Development Network (GTI-CDN) is a collaboration of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the World Bank, and other international organizations. This program facilitates strategic collaboration and gives conservation leaders and policy-makers the advanced knowledge, tools, and skill sets they need to implement effective conservation strategies. The CDN will facilitate ongoing efforts to stabilize and restore wild tiger populations. more |
