Images of Volcanic Material on a Bird Friendly Coffee Farm

Images are from a coffee grower who was in the line of fire from the ash plume of Volcano Pacaya in Guatemala in 2010. The pea-gravel size material fell all over his farm and these images show it on the drying patio of the farm and in piles from where it had to be scraped up from roads and other surfaces.

He reports that not only did the trees protect his coffee plants from the falling material, but the leaf litter on the ground acted to buffer the heat carried in the material such that his coffee plants under shade did not suffer any heat stress or burning.

More about the eruption and its effect on coffee.
