The African lion is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Lion populations have greatly decreased due to habitat loss and human conflict. These great cats formerly ranged from South America to Europe, Africa and Asia. Today lions can only be found in Africa, with the exception of a small population in the Gir Forest in Western India.
Adopt an African lion and contribute to conservation efforts at both the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.
