Asian Elephants

Asian elephants are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species. Perhaps only 30,000 still live in forests of south and southeast Asia. Asian elephants are not only endangered in the wild but in North American zoos as well. Within the next 20 years most female elephants will be too old to reproduce and within the next five decades, elephants in zoos may cease to exist. For nearly 40 years, the National Zoo has pioneered efforts to study, understand, and protect Asian elephants, both in the wild and captivity.
