The California sea lion is a shining example of successful conservation efforts. Hunted nearly to extinction by the late 1800s, these animals obtained legal protection in U.S. waters in the 1930s. This protection has enabled a strong recovery for this species and as a result the number of pups born each year has tripled since 1975.
Show your support of conservation efforts at both the National Zoo's D.C. campus and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia, by adopting a California sea lion.
