Zoo Guides

Recruitment for the 2012 training class has ended. We are no longer accepting applications for this program.

Zoo Guide volunteers lead tours for groups of all ages. Guides primarilly conduct three types of tours. Zoo Guide volunteers lead tours for groups of all ages.  Guides primarily conduct  three types of tours.  The Highlights Tour takes visitors to many of the major sites in the Zoo, starting at cheetahs and ending at Andean bears.  The Animal Coverings Tour, for children ages four to seven and their parents, has both classroom and in-Zoo components that explore lizard skins, turtle shells, feathers and pelts.  The Upper Zoo Tour takes groups around the Cheetah Conservation Station and up Asia Trail.

When no tours are scheduled, Zoo Guides act as interpreters for a variety of outdoor areas around the Zoo. Because of the breadth of their knowledge, they may also be asked to lead special-request tours.

Special qualifications: A broad interest in the Zoo and its mission, the interest and ability to manage groups, and a willingness to walk the Zoo for two hours at a time year-round.

Time commitment: Three three-hour shifts a month weekends or weekdays and monthly meetings for one year.

Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to apply.

Training:Training will be conducted on 8 weekend days in February and March 2012.

Zoo Guide recruitment will end on February 1.
