Golden Lion Tamarin Monitors

This program is temporarily closed. There will not be free-ranging golden lion tamarins at the Zoo in 2011 or 2012 due to construction of Elephant Trails.

Golden lion tamarin monitors spend late spring, summer, and fall watching the activities of these small, free-ranging monkeys. Volunteers, working singly or in pairs, collect data and talk with visitors about the animals’ endangered status and the importance and urgency of rainforest conservation.

Special qualifications: Good vision, the ability to track moving animals, a willingness to be outside in most weather conditions—including Washington’s summer heat. Volunteers should also be able to communicate effectively with visitors.

Time commitment: One two-hour shift a week, on weekdays, or one two-hour shift every other weekend. (The monkeys are free-ranging from June to mid-October.)

Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to apply.

Training: This program is closed. We are not currently accepting applications.
