Mate Switching in the genetically monogamous blue-headed Vireo

Project Description
We will capture and colorband a population of blue-headed vireos at the Hemlock Hill Biological Research Area in NW Pennsylvania. Nests will be monitored and mate switching by female vireos will be documented following predation on nests.

Responsibilities
Intern will be responsible for helping to capture and colorband birds for individual recognition in the field and for monitoring nests and behaviors between the pairmembers of vireos.

Qualifications
A keen interest in birds and field research, the ability to spend long hours in the forest and to find nests and observe behavior. Tape recording of vocalizations will also be a part of the project. Intern will work with Dr. Morton and be a part of the team of 5 ornithologists/graduate students working at Hemlock Hill Biological Research Area in Pennsylvania.

Term of Appointment
Project begins in mid to late May and ends in mid-July. Intern could begin as late as 1 June.

Housing is provided

Location
Near Cambridge Springs, PA, Crawford County in mixed hemlock, deciduous forest. No ticks or chiggars but mosquitoes and blackflies are not unknown.
