Our externship is offered to Year IV (or equivalent) students with a serious interest in zoological medicine. We request a minimum of six weeks with a preference for an eight-week commitment.
Students will participate in all facets of the medical program at the National Zoo's facility in Washington, D.C., including clinical and preventative medicine, surgery, quarantine, pathology, medical records keeping, and case rounds. A special project will be assigned whenever possible.
Requirements for accepting a position, if selected, include a negative TB test within six months of the starting date and rabies prophylaxis. Preceptors must provide their own personal insurance. We are unable to provide housing, transportation, or stipend.
