Residency in Zoological Medicine
The Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park is offering a three-year residency program in zoological medicine. The residency is designed to train those interested in zoological medicine and specialty board certification by the American College of Zoological Medicine.
The training emphasizes clinical medicine and surgery for a wide variety of species held at NZP’s two facilities, Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia.
The program will include rotations in
- Pathology
- Reproductive physiology
- Applied research at NZP
- Aquatic medicine at the Baltimore Aquarium
Requirements
- A DVM degree from an accredited school of veterinary medicine
- Preferably one year of clinical practice experience (internship or other)
- Previous zoo or wildlife experience
The second and third years of the program are contingent upon successful completion of the first year.
Stipend
This is a non-federal position, supported bythe Smithsonian Trust, with annual funding of $39,000 plus benefits.

The person selected for the residency will be notified by January 10, 2012.
Earliest start date for the program is August 1, 2012.
