Smithsonian National Zoological Park l Friends of the National Zoo

FONZ and the National Zoo offer diverse activities for kids and adults throughout the year.

Birthday Parties

FONZ Household members have the opportunity to throw a wild birthday celebration at the Zoo. Parties are held on weekends throughout the year. Registration for 2009 parties has begun.

FONZ offers a wide variety of exciting classes for people of all ages. Learn a skill, follow a life dream, enhance a resume, pique a child's curiosity—it's all possible with our classes.

Snore and Roar

(June through September)

Have you ever woken up next to a lion? (Spouses don’t count.) Now, you can! After an evening snack and an exploration of an animal house or exhibit area, led by a Zoo keeper, participants hike through the Zoo with flashlights for a nocturnal tour, then camp underneath the stars. Then they rise to the morning rumbles and warbles of the animals, and enjoy a morning activity and continental breakfast.

Summer Camp

Summer Safari Day Camp and FONZ Nature Camp are award-winning and accredited by the American Camp Association. Each session of Summer Safari Day Camp, held at the Zoo, offers a wild week for children entering grades K-5. FONZ Nature Camp provides a real adventure at the Zoo's Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia, for children entering grades 5-10.

Evening Lectures

The Zoo offers free evening lectures and book signings on various topics, offered by expert authors and researchers. Some past lecture topics have been the evolution of zoological parks, natural medicine, and the use of DNA study and other methods to improve conservation programs.

Parking is always limited at the Zoo and we encourage you to use public transportation.
