There are many satellites which orbit the earth and takes infra-red photographic images. These images are used by scientists to understand the systems which govern the earth and how man has an impact upon these systems.
Careful interpretation of these
images allows scientists to keep
track of changing land use, the
status of natural resources,
and interactions among the biosphere,
atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. But accurate and systematic
interpretation of images takes
training and experience. When
interpreting an image, scientists
pay careful
attention to several key factors:
shape, size, texture, location,
and association. Color can be
an important factor also, however,
it is important to remember that
many images are in false-color
(as with the infrared images
in this exercise).
The following exercises will test your skills at interpreting satellite images.
