Celebrate Global Tiger Day and Meet New Sumatran Tiger at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo July 29

For Release: July 23, 2012

Prowl around the Great Cats exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Zoo on Global Tiger Day, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and meet the Zoo's newest tiger – Kavi. Kavi, an 11 year-old male from Zoo Atlanta, has joined females Damai and Soyono at the National Zoo. Special enrichment demonstrations will be at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Keepers will also give special talks about how they care for the Zoo's Sumatran tigers every day, and how the tigers contribute to conservation efforts.

Visitors are invited to show their stripes with tiger face painting and tiger-themed arts and crafts. Experts from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Tiger Conservation Partnership will display tools they use in the field to study tigers and other species in Asia, including radio collars and camera traps, for visitors to see and touch. Other organizations including U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Wildlife Conservation Society and the Global Tiger Initiative will join Tiger Conservation Partnership experts in talking about the threats facing tigers in the wild and what is being done to save them.
