Research Technician

A position is available to assist in the development of the Atlas of Migratory Connectivity for North American Birds.

This will involve the analysis of the 90-year band encounter database within the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory for North American bird species.

Qualifications

  • M.S. in ecology or related wildlife field
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative methods, GIS, Access, and overall strong data organizational skills
  • Knowledge of migratory birds
  • Experience in bird banding is also desirable, not because field work may occur but to add to the overall understanding of the data
  • Passion about conservation science and have good communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to work with partners

Term of Appointment

Two years. Begins upon hiring.

Stipend

$42,000 per year + $3,000 annual health insurance reimbursement

Location

The technician will be based at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center in Washington, D.C. and be supervised by project leader Peter Marra (SI) but the technician is also expected to spend significant time working at the Bird Banding Lab in Laurel, Maryland, which is within commuting distance.
