Latte Art Award

On June 20, 2008, a masterful barista named Akihiro Okada, who works at Ogawa Coffee in Kyoto, Japan, worked his magic to win 3rd place in the World Latte Art Competition. This prestigious event of the specialty coffee industry took place in Copenhagen at the International Barista Competition.

Contestants had 8 minutes to prepare 3 drinks—cappuccino/latte, espresso macchiato, and a designer drink of choice—with artwork created on the foamy topping of each. To test for consistency, rules dictated that each drink be presented in a pair, which meant that Mr. Okada made six coffee beverages in the allotted time. He succeeded with 6 seconds to spare!

Drinks were judged on overall appearance, creativity, and harmony of the composition atop the foam, while baristas were judged on their own appearance, manual skills, and hygiene during the competition. The cappuccino, espresso, and designer beverage all captured Mr. Okada's love of nature. The Bird Friendly® theme emerged in two of his creations.
