Thanks to Golden Valley Farms (the roaster) and Florida Turnpike Services, the Sunshine State now features Bird Friendly coffee along the length of its turnpike. While Neotropical migratory birds can take refuge in the coffee farms of Latin America with shade certified as "Bird Friendly," local Floridians, "snowbirds" (northerners who journey to Florida for the winter), and other turnpike travelers can find the coffee from these farms.
Along the 312 mile toll road running from Wildwood south to Miami, motorists can enjoy certified organic Bird Friendly coffee at the turnpike's Service Plaza Fuel Facilities.
Florida Turnpike Services is a privately owned company that operates the fuel sales and convenience stores located at the 8 Service Plazas on Florida's Turnpike. The company began operation in April of 2009 as part of a major renovation plan for the Service Plazas. FTS management has previously been involved with turnpike operations for more than 20 years.
The addition of Bird Friendly coffee at 24-hour Service Plaza Fuel Facility sites fits well with other elements of the Florida Turnpike's eco-friendly philosophy, which includes new buildings certified as LEED silver level, an educational area for renewable resources, and the addition of E85 ethanol fuel at all sites.
The Florida Turnpike ranks as one of the busiest highways in the country and we look forward to working with the FTS to promote conservation through the Bird Friendly coffee program.
