The Baltimore oriole is perhaps the most famous neotropical migratory bird. Its brilliant orange and black plumage is reminiscent of the crest of Lord Baltimore, an important figure in Maryland's history, and the bird has become the mascot of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.
But our story begins in the tropics, from Mexico to northern South America, where Baltimore orioles spend most of the year.
Here they inhabit lush, tropical forests and feed on nectar, pollen, fruit, and insects.
They especially favor coffee and cacao (the plant that chocolate comes from) plantations where these crops are grown in the traditional manner, the coffee and cacao shrubs flourishing under
a shady canopy of natural forest trees.
Pairs of males and females form flocks of about 10 individuals, although sometimes as many as 30 or 40 are in a single flock.
Apart from members of a few warbler species, Baltimore orioles are often the most common migratory bird in these agricultural forests.
The birds favor the tops of trees, especially those in the genus Inga, where they forage among the numerous blossoms for nectar and pollen. Orioles have a special tongue, which resembles a brush, for lapping up nectar.
Shade grown coffee plantation, winter habitat of the Baltimore oriole.
By April, most Baltimore orioles have begun the journey north to their breeding grounds in North America, which span most of the eastern United States and into southern Canada.
Here they eschew the dense forests that so many other migratory birds favor, instead preferring open forests such as those along rivers and even in city parks.
Females build an unusual grassy hanging nest that is suspended like a sack from the end of a branch.
The shape of the nest may help deter predators from eating the eggs or young because the eggs and young are hidden from view and the entrance to the nest is difficult to access.
The nest is often built in an elm, sycamore, or cottonwood tree.
In the video clip below you can see a nest.
Because these orioles spend much of their time in the tops of trees, they are often heard before they are seen.
The male has a lovely warbling song and both males and females utter a variety of chatters and short call notes.
The female lays 4 to 5 eggs in late spring or early summer and incubates them alone.
Then, both the male and the female feed the young.
Pairs make only one nesting attempt per year.
And by August or early September, most orioles are on their way back to the neotropics.
Sometimes orioles can be enticed to visit our backyards.
Oriole at hummingbird feeder (left), and halved banana (right)
Orioles sometimes visit feeders put out for hummingbirds, and are also attracted to fruit such as bananas and oranges.
They are also reputed to eat grape jelly!
Please post your tips for attracting orioles to your backyard in the comments section below.

I had a flock of these marvelous birds this year, they were quite entertaining, and do love grape jelly, I could barely keep them fed. They often buzzed me while I was filling the feeders, and would feed while I sat a few feet away.. hope they come back next year.

Find it interesting and true to what I found out from neighbors who fed the orioles by spreading grape jam on a log in their yard. Their lovely song was heard when they neared my property.

I live in Southern Canada and in December 2007 I had an Oriole feeding on suet and raisins in a window feeder. It does eat oranges, cherries and walnut pieces. I will try grape jam because I suspect my feeders are the only thing keeping it alive. There is snow on the ground!
12/21/2007
This sight does not do the birdsong justice......a very nice article tho. The orioles that visit my bird-garden sing the most beautiful song non stop in the spring, and a lesser version all sommer. What a treat they are,I had a pair nest right out my backdoor in a cherry tree. The nest alone is fantastic.
2/21/2008
I hung out oriole feeders with grape jelly and oriole nectar last spring. Just as the Apple trees broke bud, the Orioles showed up, and for three days made our backyard a wonderful magical wrld of orange and black birds!
They DO like grape jelly!
The biggest attraction seemed to be the apple blossoms just ready to open. They stuck their beaks into the buds-eating I am not sure what but I know we had a bumper crop of apples off our semi dwarf Delicious apple tres this year. I hope they come back this spring!

Great article. I've fed Orioles for a couple of summers with orange halves and grape jam. They LOVE the grape jam! I've seen them try to feed on the hummingbird feeders, too, so I put out an Oriole feeder (same sugar mixture as the hummingbird, but no food coloring needed - for either hummers or Orioles). When they first arrived in the yard, they went to the Oriole feeder a couple of times, but both male and female preferred the orange halves and the grape jam.
I'd like to know if the same birds come back to the same area year after year. Anyone know?

Buy shade grown coffee & help songbirds, like these Baltimore Orioles. I have a beautiful & cheerful Baltimore Oriole who comes back each year & breeds behind my apt building. I rarely see females around, but I see & hear the male all the time. The nest of one pair was visible hanging from a tree when the leaves fell last autumn, so I keep checking this year to see if I can see them building another! It's a really amazing nest, built by an amazing bird. Also, first thing in the morning now, along with the Robins, the Oriole is singing, to welcome us to the dawn of a new day!
5/22/2008
Saw a female!! She is so lovely. We looked out the office window & in the privet bush was a beautiful female oriole. Haven't seen her mate yet, but we are keeping an eye out, of course!!
5/28/2008
The orioles returned this spring-May 2008,not in the big numbers we saw in 2007, but unlike 2007, at least 3 pairs stayed in the area to nest. They gobbled down grape jelly and ripped up and ate as many oranges as I hung out! Up Yesterday, as they have for over a month, they flew to and fro, eating like food was going to vanish any minute.
Today, the 29th of June, 2008 I have not seen a single Oriole-and wonder where they are. They have been at the oranges and grape jelly for over a month.
Hope tomorrow I will see them again--and perhaps some fledglings!

June 30, 2008-2nd day and no Orioles! I don't knwo where they went! I know its too early for their migration south.
We had three paisr in the area and they are gone! The oranges hang, shriveling in the sun.
Anyomne know when they leave to fly south from Southern New England?

It is July 2nd-and my oranges hang untouched. Too early for the Orioles to have departed south!
Wonder where they went?

We live in LaCrosse, WI and every year in early May I hear my first oriole and sure enough they return. I hang my votive cup feeder full of grape jelly and the fun begins. By late June the babies are perched on the feeder as the parents feed them. And usually by mid July they are gone. The best 3 months of bird watching!
7/3/2008
We had at least 3 sets of orioles arrive this spring-May 2008. Each week they would consume 2 large jars of grape jelly! Amazing sweet tooth. It is now July 7th and we only have one lone female that is eating jelly. I wonder where they all went. Just one week ago, my husband saw a baby oriole jumping around on the rock wall, mother was squacking in the branches above. The baby eventually got to the mother. Does anyone think they have headed south already? We live in Berwick, Maine. Patti C.
7/8/2008
Wow, so I am not the only one to note they seemed to have vanished!
All the bird books say they leave in late August but maybe not.
In mid June we saw a papa oriole feeding a fledgling by the Orange hanger but that was the only baby we saw. But the adults were flying back and forth wih vigor all that week up until the big disappearance, gobbling down grape jelly and oranges so fast! I bought a big bag and then next day they were gone. A friend of mine in FLA says Orioles are back in her state and they appeared about a week ago. She wondered if perhaps that foretells of a hard cold winter?
I miss their flute like calls and their beautiful colors.

Jelly, is a wonderful attraction for orioles. Grape seems to be a favorite flavor. However, please use just jelly and not jam. Jam has pectin which is harmful. Another delight to attract them, is oranges, bananas and nectar. Some oriole feeders can be exspensive, if you place a good size bowl , make sure it is unbreakable, secure it to a deck railing , tree branch or other by using two small bungee cords to secure it in place, you will have the same results. Make sure your feeders are not in bright sunny locations as this warms up and spoils the jelly or nectar. Just a couple of table spoons of jelly a day, will keep them coming back every day.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize jam was a problem! I didn't pay attention to which I put out! Hope I didn't harm them all!! That would kill me:-(
I will make sure its jelly I put out from now on. We saw one male oriole last evening so I put out oranges for them-thinking they had returned but so far-no further sightings.

Well on the issue of jam-my hubby, who is a senior R&D chemist, sia djelly actually has more pectin than jam. He also said all fruit has pectin. He does not think that would harm the Orioles so I am hoping he's right and I didn't.
Last Oriole sighting here was July 19th. They came back for a few days, not too many and they didn't eat much of the oranges I put out but did eat the grape jelly.

Loved the article, saw my first oriole a few days ago, 4 together, they were sitting in a wild apple tree. I was in awe. I live in Welland Ontario Canada and I have a wealth of birds here, lots of forest, canals and rivers. I just started birding last year, what fun. And I really try hard not to bother them at all. I have been taking pictures of all sightings since winter of 2007.

Great article. I spotted what I thought was a Baltimore Oriole at my hummingbird feeder in Central Texas on 9-8-08. I attract and feed several bird species but had never seen this particular bird before. This morning, at about the same time of day, the Oriole returned to the hummingbird feeder, however, this time my husband saw it as well. After an extensive Google search, I've come to the conclusion that this was, in fact, a Baltimore Oriole migrating south. Because of the info contained in this article, I have since put grape jelly near the familar feeder and hope to see him again. I have some acreage in Central Texas and am curious, is seeing these birds common to this area, or should I consider myself lucky for having witnessed this beauty the few times that I have?

I think Orioles, Baltimore and Bullocks, migrate thru your area in the Fall. By late August they are usually gone from here in CT.
They do show up here in May which means they may appear in your area around march? Maybe late Feb?

Great article. We live in southeast wisconsin. Bought a feeder last April, put the oranges in it and as soon as we saw them feeding added grape jelly to the dishes. We ended up with two pair for the summer as well as their offspring. Went through 6 large jars of grape jelly. Absolutely beautiful birds to watch.
3/29/2009
I have my feeder out early this year. I don't want them to court another family. We gave them grape jelly & I modified a hummingbird feeder for them last year. They loved it. They wouldn't even go to the acutal Oriole feeder that I bought. Their song is the most beautiful!!
4/13/2009
I put my feeders out early as well. Last year May 1st an Oriole was trying to perch on a hummingbird feeder So I put out grape jelly and hurried and made 6 parts water and 1 part sugar. Oriole mix
4/22/2009
sugar water mixture works best for hummers and orioles at a 4 to one ratio

Its a great article and I enjoyed reading all the comments as well. This year, for the 1st time since moving to WI 10 years ago, I've finally enticed a pair of Baltimore Orioles to my apartment patio. They drink from a hummy feeder topped with an orange and grape jelly. Think I'll try the banana tomorrow, though. This pair even squawks at me from the woods to get me into the apartment so they can eat. They eat just 3' from the door. Amazing to me!
5/19/2009
We have one, possibly two, male Orioles fluting and singing and calling, gobbling up grape jelly mixed with dried mealworms! The 1st appeared in my neighbor's ornamental Pear about a month so!
Have not seen any females but I keep hoping he'll attract a mate!
Disappointing as last year our yard swarmed with Orioles but this year seems to be one, or possibly two males. But I am glad to have them!

I think I may have discovered an answer for the poster above named Marie who wondered why the Orioles suddenly vanished in late June 2008. This website says they switch to a protein based diet in mid-June to prepare for parenting:
www.wildbirdstore.com/documents/feeding_orioles.pdf
They return to find grape jelly later in the season, with the children.
Also, no confirmation anywhere of pectin doing any kind of damage to the health of any birds. Sounds about right to me. Pesticides are a problem; pectin, no.
Yes, they are gorgeous. Like large Monarch Butterflies.

I live in Southeast Wisconsin. Do the orioles stay in our area through the fall? I find they arrive in April in my yard and by July I don't see them anymore. Should I keep putting out the oranges and jelly and hope they come back? Maybe its the change in diet in late June that sends them away.
7/2/2009
I live in Lowell, IN and in late April 2009, I had a pair of orioles that pecked at my kitchen window, I'd walk over to the window and they would fly to my front screen door. They would land on the gold handle and peck on my glass door, I would go to door and they'd go back to the kitchen window, this went on for days. I put out a slice of apple with grape jelly on it. They devoured the apple and jelly. I then put out small jars with grape jelly and humingbird food which they continued to eat for the next month. I never did see their nest or babies. They had a beautiful song and never ceased to amaze me with their window pecking and love of the grape jelly that I hope they will come back next year. This is the first time I've ever seen an oriole. Amazing. Paul Karczewski 7/2/2009
7/2/2009
Great article and comments. I, too, live in Southeast Wisconsin and I've been feeding the Orioles for years. I start with oranges around April 15th and then switch to grape jelly as soon as I spot the first Oriole. I was searching the internet tonight to try and find out why they've disappeared, and now I know. I will keep putting some jelly out, though, just in case there are some stragglers or in case some stop by from further up North. (I think I have a racoon who climbs the lilac bush next to the jelly feeder at night and eats it all up!)
7/24/2009
Very good article. I have a camp site in mid state OH and the orioles were everywhere this summer. They LOVED grape jelly. The dad would bring the babies to the grape jelly and feed them. I only saw the males feeding the babies not the females. But right at the end of July the orioles were gone. 8/5/09
8/6/2009
I live in southeast minnesota, I have gone through 8 jars
of grape jelly since late may today august 21st had 4 different orioles eating away around 7:00pm.
8/21/2009
We have fed grape jelly and orange slices to orioles for two summers now. we have a feeder on our front porch and a feeder under the eves in the back of the house. We go through a lot of grape jelly but the beauty of these birds is breath taking. We will have four or five birds in the trees by the feeder and they sit in the branches and take turns running each other off for their turn at the jelly. A couple of days ago I decided to make an elegant gazebo style feeder to add ambiance our front porch instead of my crude T 2X4 feeder. The birds buzzed around it for about 30 minutes and then decided it was safe and mobbed it. They apparently appreciate ambiance too.

Grape Jelly is the KEY to having them come back year after year to your house. I have proof in photos !!
the parents fill their beaks up with it and go back to the nest to feed the young ones. then when the young cna fly, you may have four orioles or more at the feeder. BirdMan of Sterling, NY

We live in southwest Georgia and have had what we believe to be the same male show up the last 4 years on our humming bird feeder in February (I have a photo dated 2/12/06). I wired a small red colored dipping (sauce) bowl to some branches 20 feet from our kitchen sink window, and he will consume a teaspoon per day...not just grape jelly, also pear, blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, plum, and even Mayhaw jelly! We've put out oranges too and thanks for tip about banannas...we have some in our freezer we use to make smoothies I might try!

My mom lives in Buffalo, NY. These beauties are absolutely crazy about grape jelly she puts out starting around mid may or so. She sometimes has to refill the feeders several times a day. They often line up on her fence to take turns feeding on the jelly. Its amazing to see.

Wonderful article. Everyone, please remember to post what city/state or part of the country you live in. I was looking specifically for when the Orioles start arriving around S.E. WI (Waukesha). I want to be ready! I had them last year at my 3rd floor apt. patio and want to make sure I have them come back this year. Thanks to those people who posted from my area. I will start around mid April with my Oranges and Jelly. Another sight suggested spray painting a tennis ball orange and putting that out to make sure they see it! Great idea too. G.K.

I live in Fountain City, Wisconsin...a neighbor stopped yesterday to let me know that I had a hanging oriole nest in my birch tree. I looked it up & he certainly was right. I'm now very excited, but know very lttle about these gorgeous birds...Do you think this nest is actually from last year? I haven't seen any orioles around this year yet. Should I be setting-out the aforemetioned delicacies (jelly & orange slices) to try to lure them back?
3/16/2010
Hung a 'fake' orange on my Oriole feeder to let them know I'm ready for them. That was 3/15 and today 3/16 saw one next to it on my suet feeder. I had that grape jelly out in 30 sec. FLAT! I hear him now in the woods. It seems early to me but glad to see one! G.K. Waukesha, WI

i have 3 pairs of orioles each year. as early as the last week in april but usually up into the middle of may.
I expermmited each year with oranges and apricots and watermelon and plums and cherrys and each bird has its favorite fruit. When i was out or oranges one day i hung a deep lid on a platform feeder and poured fresh orange juice in it and put pieces of fruit in the juice. I had 12 young ones after they fledged and they were constant visiters all day till early fall when the males left first then the females and finally the young ones. the plums were the least favorite but the watermelon and cherrys were the top treats
3/30/2010
my idea was to hang a platform in a tree near the necter feeders and put a deep lid on it. I poured fresh orange juice into the lid and cut up pieces of watermelon and apricots and plums and cherries according to what was available at the local grocery store. i had twelve fledglings last year and they loved it all and perched on the lid and drank the juice and ate the fruit and were joined by one young evening grosbeak that was there everyday too.
watermelon and cherrys were the biggest hits.

Can something be done to prevent all these window strikes - we had a flock of them visiting our yard last Sept. Whenever I would go out on the deck and sit in the chair, they would come close up to me and inspect me from a close by young chestnut tree. It went so far that one landed on my head and stayed there for over a minute - it was incredible - I had covered all the windows with pieces of alu-foil to try to prevent them from striking the windows. Now I found bird of pray cutouts in a local feed store for the 2010 season. Their beauty, happiness, friendlyness touched me deeply.

Great article! I live in Elkhart, Indiana, by the Michigan boarder. I have never seen and Oriole here in Elkhart. But on April 29, 2010, I got a show I will never forget. He bathed himself forever in our birdbath. I walked all over the deck to get different pictures and he just kept right on bathing. I got about 11 pictures of him. He was here again today but just stayed in the tree. I was just reading this artical, ran and got the grape jelly and now I am waiting. He is so beautiful and doesn't seem to mind us being around where he is. He has come both times around (noon) lunch time. lol. Smart bird. Thanks again for the article. I wish you had just the bird singing so I could really hear it.

I live in Adger, AL. I have a male and female orchard oriole pecking on my kitchen window right now. They have been here for exactly a week now. The female started and now it is mostly the male. Although both are relentless. They are obsessed. I have tried the cutouts on the window and a fake owl that the head moved on. They both dive bombed the owl, nothing has worked. I didn't want to cover my view up. The birds have pecked on all the windows along the back of the house. Usually picking whichever room we are in. I have gotten good pics though. Still don't know what to do besides cover my windows.
5/3/2010
still no sightings here in Old Lyme CT
as of May 5
My crab apple tree did not have many blossoms this spring--maybe all the wind and bad weather
I usually spot the orioles in this tree
I will be sad if they do not visit me this year
I have grape jelly, orange slices, etc for them!!!!

Thank you for including a video. And your commentary was especially nice. I saw my first oriole today while walking in a Forest Preserve in Northern Illinois. I was moved to tears as several of them did a circular flight around before landing in the brush among the trees. It was spectacular!

Do Oriels have long tongues, I saw a special jelly jar holder at a store and wondered how they would be able do get to the bottom of the jar?

I live in Tecumseh ,Michigan, lower east corner. I have given up on attracting orioles. My family teased me relentlessly for years as I tried to draw them in. The only one single time I saw one, I was home alone with no proof of the sighting! As it is May 11, is it too late to try again?
5/11/2010
My family teases me also, my daughter says I am obsessed with Orioles, my Grandson says :Grandma, they are Baltimore Orioles, so they are in Baltimore ", but I am still waiting for a sighting . the good news is that I have nummingbirds all day long on my feeder right outside my kitchen window

I finally heard and spotted two orioles in my yard in Old Lyme CT, they were not on any of my feeders, just singing and going from tree to tree May 16
5/16/2010
We have had Orioles spotted in our area for about a week now. Have had oranges out, but haven't seen them eat any yet. Will try the grape jelly and a banana tomorrow. Delafield, WI
5/17/2010
We have some Orioles here now eating seed from my regular bird feeder. It's very unusual to see them here - I'm sure they're just passing through on migration. I think I'll buy some grape jelly. Telluride, Colorado -8750 in altitude and still very cool weather.
5/22/2010
The orioles left so early this year, any idea why? I live in SW Missouri, and they usually eat a jar of jelly every other day, and go through at least a 3# bag or oranges before they go. This year, they've already left, only 2 jars of jelly and they never even tasted the oranges???
5/26/2010
Is it too late to put out jelly and oranges to attract orioles in So. NH?
5/27/2010
For the past 8 years (since moving into our new home) we've had 2 males and a female visit our feeders every May and June. This year we've kept fresh oranges w/grape jelly out since early May when they typically arrive and have yet to see them. We're not sure why, it's been a beautiful spring and we miss seeing them. DB, just outside Bangor Maine
6/13/2010
Does anyone know when the orioles leave the Minneapolis area? There have been many at the feeder until two days ago. Our chipmunks have developed quite a taste for grape jelly. I enjoy them but prefer orioles.6/24/2010
6/24/2010
We have had 3 pairs of Orioles at our feeders since mid May. They have been very active, but we have kept up with them by keeping the feeders full, plenty of grape jelly and oranges. Suddenly, we haven't seen them in 2 days. Isn't it too early for them to leave? MB in Eastern MA
6/28/2010
Loved it. I have Orioles coming to my birdbaths, but not to the feeders and oranges. Everything is under three hugh pines. Branches are cut high. I've had them coming here for six years. Any suggestions? Chris J. Gaylord,Mi. 7/2/10

love this site, full of good information and its so interesting to hear about what geographic areas are seeing orioles at what times
7/6/2010
good info on this site. Orioles appeared in our yard around the end of May. Heard about the oranges and grape jelly so we tried. Could not get them to take the oranges but we bought a bright orange plastic bowl, put some grape jelly in it and hung it from the tree with an orange ribbon and they could not get enough! Sadly, I have not seen them now for about a week. We will try to attract again next year - what a beautiful bird! Mukwonago WI 7/12/10
7/12/2010
I put up a tupperware plastic 1 cup dry measuting cup orange in color and hung it up outside filled with grape jam, I have so many Orioles every year even a Robin joins them!
7/14/2010
I have at least 2 pairs of Orioles this year. Grape jelly needs refilling twice a day - forget the orange since they do too. This is the first year I have been able to attract the Orioles but my Mom lives about 5 miles away and she has had them each year for the past few years. Grand Blanc, Michigan
7/17/2010
Thanks for all the notes about your sightings. I am in Brookfield WI and start with the oranges in mid-April. They don't go to waste as the cardinals, the house finches, the woodpeckers, and even an occasional robin also appreciate the oranges. The Orioles show up here in early May and then I feed the grape jelly.
The birds disappear for a few weeks in late June but if you are patient the parents are back in July. I keep the oranges out all summer long for the variety of birds. My orioles also hang off my hummingbird feeder.
By the first of August, though, an oriole sighting is rare around here. And it is usually the female. I put out fresh fruit and jelly each day for my regular flock and any orioles passing thfough. About August the bees and wasps start finding the jelly. Even butterflies land on the jelly. So I keep it out in smaller quantities and away from the deck.
I, too, wondered if the orioles were heading south from Wisconsin already? Maybe taking a leisurely roadtrip south after all that hard work raising a family? It would be helpful to hear when the orioles leave from states south of WI. Maybe there is a pattern. Or maybe they are off catching mosquitos for the protein-based diet they need to migrate south? Tell us more. Tell us more.
We love watching and listening to this beautiful bird. We have had one with particularly bright foliage return since he fledged three years ago. It looks like he is wearing a brilliant orange ascot so we call him "Pretty Boy".

We have had orioles come here for the last three summers. This year has been so different. They came at their usual time--last of April and were here until right after the fourth of July. They ate a massive amount of grape jelly. Brought the babies and fed them. The adults are gone but the babies still come to the feeder. I have no idea where they've gone or what is happening. Very strange. I live in Tonkawa, Oklahoma --close to the Kansas border. Would love to hear what anyone is experiencing and why they think its happening. Makes me very sad.

Loved reading about the orioles. I had an experience of a pair pecking on by window fiercly. At first it frightened me. Everyday these birds pecked on my windows. Would love to hear if that is something others experienced.
8/11/2010
Good info. This is my first summer with orioles. I tried feeding them last summer but none came. In mid-July this year one appeared at my hummingbird feeder. I put out grape jelly and now have a flock. I wondered if they were in transit although they are still here. I was surprised at how raspy they were at squawking at one another over the food. The males seem much shier than the females and fledglings. There is one that seems to have trouble with its tongue; open mouth constantly but no sounds and the tongue seems to protrude. It is able to eat. Hope it's OK.

Good article. We live in the Lake Mille Lacs area & feed the orioles all spring, summer & until they leave. It's Aug. 22nd & we still have loads of orioles here but not sure for how long since sometimes they leave in late Aug. or early Sept. Would love to know if they leave based on weather temps or hours of daylight, can't find that answer anywhere.

I live in southern Iowa. These articles are very interesting. We have had Orioles for the past two years. I saw an Oriole on my hummingbird feeder last spring, so hurried and got my Oriole feeder out and hung it on the clothesline about 6 feet from the house. Have had them last year and this year. For a while in late July and early August, they seemed to have disappeared, but are now coming back to the feeder. I have increased the amount of Grape Oriole Food that I have been putting out, as I am thinking they are getting ready to migrate south. Have never seen a female Oriole, nor have I seen any young Orioles. Would love to see that. They are beautiful birds.

Great article. I live in Wisconsin across from a park. We have lots of trees and I live in an apartment on the second floor. I have a balcony and my downstairs neighbor build an oriole feeder for me. It is made of wood with two holes and has a roof. I spray painted it bright orange, bought two voltive cups 2" wide to fit the holes. I put grape jelly in both cups and I have gone through about two jars of jelly. There are times when I have eight orioles waiting in line.. The males really yell at the other males as they do not want to share the platform with another male. The females come to the feeder too. Today is August 23. 2010, and I have not seen any birds today or yesterday come to think of it. I don't know if they have gone for the season. I would really like know their migration schedule here in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
8/23/2010
I really enjoyed reading other's comments. I live just outside Grand Rapids Mi and had a couple families of Orioles this past summer; all have headed South except for one lone male who seems a little out of sorts. During the summer when all were eating their favorite food Grape Jelly I'd have a female oriole come to the window sill and "stare" at me when they were out of food. This seemed to happen on quite a few occasions and was wondering if anyone else had the "Begging Baltimore Orioles" at their feeders.
8/29/2010
I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the Orioles came around Mother's day, they have been here all summer, have had babies and the babies have become teenagers and they all seem to be here. Now it mostley the young ones I think. It is Sept. 1st and there are still some of them around. This AM 2 females and a little while ago a male. I keep thinking they will leave. I started feeding them about 3 years ago and in the past they have always left by the end of July. I hope this is OK for them, they have a long way to go.

thanks!

I have a female oriole that keeps coming to my yard, and it seems young...its all alone and seems very healthy eats grape jelly and sugar water but it is always alone... It seems to be looking for the other orioles. It goes to the same areas in the yard where they all hung out earlier this summer. I'm concerned that the cold weather will come and it will not survive...today is the 8 of Oct. and I just saw her at the feeder this evening....Greenville, Wisconsin

I came back to this website and it helped. THank you dudes so much.

I just photographed a Baltimore Oriole eating from my sunflower feeder today. It's October 28 2010, Boyne City, MI It is a male...shouldn't he have migrated by now? He was actually chasing away the Blue Jays...Oriole 2 Blue Jays 0. I've only had them at the hummingbird feeder in the summer. And no it wasn't a black headed grosbeak...he's not even supposed to be here either if it was and too big for a redstart. Photos to prove it with date stamp.
10/28/2010
I have a male Baltimore Oriole visiting (Spring Hope, NC). He arrived early December just before a snow storm and has stayed. He is eating homemade suet (lard, peanut butter, cornmeal) and orange halves strung on a coat hanger. He appears to be alone. He is holding his own against a Mockingbird who is very territorial.

We live in Central Kansas (Salina) have had a family of Orioles the past two years and can't wait for their return! They usally arrive back from South America late April or early May here. Last year we had 3 beautiful males and several females and babies came along, at times there would be the entire family having dinner at the Oriole feeder, filled with several holes of grape jelly, a sight to behold!!!

Great article. I am wondering when should I be putting out the jelly? I live in Ohio.I have tried for several years to attract them, but no luck.I am wondering when the best time is to get prepared. Thanks, OHIO
4/1/2011
I started feeding them last year using a two-dish covered feeder and tea cup feeder that I made. I fill them with grape jelly and attach orange halves to the covered feeder and had them all summer. They are so much fun to watch. I didn't know when to put them out...thank you to the Salina post I will get mine out at the middle of this month. We live in Hays, KS. I have also put our my first Blue Bird house hoping to attract them to my yard.
4/2/2011
I have a pair of orioles that show up each spring here in Indiana. I also put out colorful string for them to build their nest. Three years ago we had to cut down a tree and found a beautiful nest made with the string I provided for them. They are beautiful birds and their song is so lovely. I am always excited when they show up.

4-25-11 Rochester NY - Male Baltimore oriole paid me a surprise visit late yesterday afternoon. Can't wait for him to return! What a way to brighten up a dreary, cold, rainy day!
4/26/2011
NE Ohio. today while driving I saw a male oriole sitting on the side of the road. I turned around and was able to pick him up (I think he may have got hit by a car) he looked ok but something was wrong or else I wouldnt be able to pick him up. i brought him home and sat him on an outside table. He jumped over to a bush we have and just perched there and closed his eyes. i came back 3 hours later and he was still there. I found a locale lady who rescues wild birds. She said she would take him in. this time when i went to pick him up he was acting more lively and not to happy that i was holding him. She looked him over and saw nothing broken and thinks he will be ok in a few days. She is going to release him once she thinks he is well! The story even gets better! We have had a mated pair that has nested in our tree the past 2 years and later in the day I saw the male! I'm so glad there back and was able to save another male......I know he was going to get run over if i did'nt go back to help.
They are such beautiful birds!
5/7/2011
Have had a pair of Orioles nesting in our Black Walnut tree for the last four years. I have put out grape jelly and oranges and orange marmalade for them. They never feed off of them. They DO feed on the nearby Kentucky Coffee tree blossoms that blooms in late May.

Like the article. Was searching for feeding info as our feeder is being visited by a male B.O. who showed up on Saturday, and came back Sunday. First sighting of one. He has been eating sunflower seeds, as the weather has been cool and rainy, no insects except blackflies, and none of the fruit trees are in bloom. Will get something more suitable for him to feed on.

I have been making a 1 to 6 ratio of sugar water mixed with orange juice. The orioles seem to love it. Now hummingbirds are coming too. So I changed the ratio to 1 to 5 (since hummers need 1 to 6 ratio) to sort of keep both species happy. I just hope the orange juice doesn't hurt the hummers. Maybe I should leave it out and just do sugar water. But I don't know if the orioles would be happy with just sugar water? By the way, I am in southeastern wisconsin (racine).

Kansas City, Missouri. Heard the loveliest song for a couple weeks before finally spotting the source: a male Baltimore oriole. After that, several days ago, I saw two males fighting over a tree, and then a female. Yesterday for the first time I put up a feeder. Within a couple hours it was discovered and now I have orioles (only the males) visiting every few minutes. Wow! I may have to put out a second one next year. I must have gotten lucky since so many people worry about getting their feeders out early, and I clearly wasn't early. I guess the orioles were setting up camp in my area regardless. I'm happy to hear from an above comment that other birds will eat the oranges and other fruit.
5/21/2011
I also mix 1 to 6 ratio of sugar water. The orioles love it along with the hummingbirds. I live in Upstate New York.

5/23/11 Good article!
I live in Sarnia, Ontario Canada about 1/2 km (1/4 mile) from Lake Huron. A male baltimore oriole arrived in my back yard about a week and a half ago. He was at the hummngfbird feeder, so I put out the oriole feeder. He was there 4 days befoe I saw the female. Both are beautiful birds. Hope they stay and nest in my area. It is an older (post world war 2 built) neighbourhood and well established with lots of tall trees.
We have a huge natural park here in Sarnia that is incredible for bird watching, and it also has a great beach. Everything to attract all kinds of birds.
5/23/2011
We have Baltimore Orioles for the first time this year and love it! I am feeding them my homemade grape jelly (no high fructose corn syrup) and they are devouring it. Now I have a use for all that grape juice I've got stored in the freezer. We couldn't eat the jelly fast enough ourselves. I go through a quart of jelly every four days. They seem to like that better than the sugar water I have out for them. We also have several different varieties of seed out. All the birds have been hungry. It's been a very cold, wet spring in Minnesota. We hope we've made our bird buffet so tempting they'll return every year.
5/30/2011
Love your article....very informative! This is my first year seeing the Orioles & you can be sure I'll be using all these great tips to attract more. They are just wonderful to watch.linda from Michigan
5/30/2011
I live in upstate NY and have been feeding orioles sugar water purchased at the farm store, as well as fresh oranges and grape jelly which does contain high fructose corn syrup and pectin. Within the past 2 days we have had 2 males die at our feeder but have been using the same jelly (Smuckers) all month with no problems. Have taken grapejelly away but wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Seems like an overabundance of orioles this year.

This makes the 3rd spring/summer that we have fed them grape jelly. They arrive here in Kansas about Mother's Day and are in a feeding frenzy. We counted around 25 this year. They are eating almost 3 jars of jelly a day out of 6 jelly feeders that we hang from shepards hooks. They also love my hummingbird feeders over the oriorle feeders. They are now nesting so they do not eat as much jelly. Around the middle of July they will start bringing their fledglings to the jelly feeders and will feed them the jelly. The first spring we had about 6 and last spring around 15. They seem to double almost every year in number. Can always tell when they arrive by their song. The males usually arrive first. I look forward to their arrival now each spring after a long cold winter here in Kansas. Love these birds....they are so beautiful...hear them singing/chattering now..need to go feed them. They will sit in the tree above the feeders and chatter to let us know they need jelly..good birding!!
6/8/2011
I live in Durand Wisconsin. In early May we had about 8 Orioles hanging around. Set out Oranges and grape jelly. They hung around for a while and then all of a sudden they disappeared. What happened to them and do I continue to leave food out just in case they come back?? I miss those beautiful birds and their singing. Still have the humming birds which I love even more. I see a lot of orioles in nebraska
6/17/2011
I live in Jackson Michigan and every year have one or two orioles stop by. But this year they hung around for about 3 weeks we fed them oranges and grape jelly and had a oriole feeder with the sugar water in it. Then about 3 days ago we put out fresh oranges as we did almost daily and they have not been back. I miss watching them and wonder why they left so early in the year. Does anyone know? Maureen
6/22/2011
I live in Rochester, Ny and had more Orioles this year than ever before. About a week ago, gone, SO dissapointed. I will keep putting out the fresh nectar and grape jelly and mealworms(protein) in the hopes I will see them again this year. As another in this thread put it, they are simply breathtaking to watch. Mine also call me when I get home from work for fresh jelly or nectar refills. Never had much luck with oranges though
6/28/2011
I live in Boscawen, NH. The orioles have been coming for about 3-4 years. At first they only ate oranges and a few drank the liquid. Now they want only grape jelly. I don't have to tell you how I go through the jelly. This year is the best for we have been blessed with all the new babies that now look the size of the parents. Total I get at least 8-10. I am at the point where I don't know who's baby belongs to who. I just love them.
7/3/2011
I have a feeder up for the orioles, plus grape jelly. They and the catbirds love the grape jelly. They can't get enough. I've gone through three large jars already and it's only early July. I live in northeast Ohio. Last year the orioles left mid month of July. I'm bracing myself for their mysterious leaving at night. I will get up one morning and no one will be coming to the feeders and I'll wait all day then realize. They have gone. It's happy for them, sad for me. I do love them. They only sing early in spring, though, whereas the catbirds sing for everything. I watched one sing, as though pleased beyond believe, every time he ate a caterpillar (a bunch of caterpillars had just emerged on a bush in the yard)
7/6/2011
I started out with orange halves, then went to orange marmalade, they loved it. I also offered grape jelly but they passed it over. I had them since April which now is the middle of July and they started slowing down coming to the feeders, but thru out the time I had at least three couples and there babies coming, I am already starting to miss them!
7/15/2011
I have had orioles coming to my jelly and liquid feeders ( I have 2 of each) since they arrived in my area-Wichita, KS-in late April. There were days when they'd eat all the jelly I put out but now the jelly is hardly touched. I've been puzzled by this and wondered why as the birds are not gone-I can see them hopping from branch to branch in my trees.
I read in an earlier post that they start eating lots more protein(bugs). This makes a lot more sense because they aren't gone they are just not eating very much of the jelly I'm putting out. By the way, I add a little bit of 100% grape juice to the jelly which keeps it from drying out.
7/18/2011
I live in central Minnesota, the Orioles came this year in late May, 2 pairs and then disappeared in early June, they never have done this before. They used to come and stay and then bring their babies to feed. My mother usually has about 10 pairs, which would stay around all summer eating from her grape jelly and hummingbird feeders, hers all disappeared, too. They should have their babies at the feeders now, but they are not around. I am uneasy about this behavior, have they sickened and died this year? They usually stick around all summer till migration. I hope the fact that the sugar I use to make syrup is now from Roundup Ready sugar beets is not causing an illness or death. Once I found out that Roundup Ready sugar beets were being used, I switched to cane sugar.
We don't know what Genetically Modified sugar beets may do, they have not been tested, I hope that the birds are not "canaries in a coal mine". I hope the Orioles are OK and will come back.
WE have had a strange spring and summer, my apple trees didn't bloom this year and the Orioles disappeared....I hope global warming and GMO's are not destroying the beauty of our environment.

It's August 4th and we still have Orioles feeding at our grape jelly feeders here in Kansas. The babies have figured out how to eat the jelly and are just about the same size as the females, so hard to tell which is which. Haven't seen but 1 or 2 males the past couple of weeks. With each passing day now, won't be too surprised one morning when they will be gone, but will be glad after a long winter to hear their song in the Spring.
8/4/2011
I live in Grand Blanc, Michigan and started feeding a pair of Orioles the end of April. The male came to the hummingbird feeder. It then flew to my kitchen window, and then to the front door. I hurriedly put their nectar feeder outside, along with Welch's grape jelly. This is the second year we have had them and I am thrilled that they have returned.
Haved seen one for two days. Not since the female came for nectar. I think this site is very interesting and informative. 8/04/2011

I live in the Buffalo NY area and started feeding orioles two years ago. I had 1 family last year and at least 3 this year. I use regular store brand grape jelly, and organic navel oranges. I make my own sugar water (same for Hummingbirds and orioles.) They (the orioles) are still around but fewer in number. Will be gone soon. Had a huge amount of catbirds in the spring but none now. Love the orioles. I did notice that the orioles ate more of the grape jelly in the spring and early summer and are now eating more of the oranges. The hummers are going crazy filling up on the sugar water.
8/9/2011
We had 3 nesting pairs this spring/summer and they all left two days ago except for one lone half grown oriole left behind. He keeps coming to the nectar and jelly feeder and I'm worried he doesn't know enough to fly south. We live in Southern Minnesota. Don't they fly in flocks?
8/19/2011
Ashby MA 8/27/11 They are still here!! I have gone through 21 32oz jars of grape jelly this season, I am also a bit worried that they may not leave, no catbirds around now.
8/27/2011
Does anyone know when Baltimore Orioles leave to go south? I live in Michigan and never get them, and here it is August 29, 2011 and now they are here!
8/29/2011
I live near Cleveland, Ohio and I think the Orioles have packed their bags and headed south. I have only seen two this week, and just a week ago I had 6 and 7 at a time at my feeders. Saw two males on Wed. and no one since. I will miss them, but will have my jelly and nectar out in mid April to welcome them back.
9/2/2011
Had several Baltimore Orioles feeding at the hummingbird feeder in South Texas today. That's a first for our yard. The hummingbirds wait until the Orioles are scared off before they come back for more. I just read stories about orioles scaring off the hummers, but they seem to be sharing today.
9/6/2011
Cat Spring Texas 70 miles west of Houston and north of Interstate 10. On September 04 2011 a Baltimore Oriole was at our bird feeder platform. Strong north winds and over 100 degrees. As of September 09 2011 he is still here.
9/10/2011
Enjoyed the article. I am Lake Limestone Texas, in the Central Texas corridor. I have 2 males and 1 female for the first time ever! Came to hummingbird feeder and I started putting out grape jelly which they dearly love. They are breathtakingly beautiful!

We've had Orioles for three years and every year we have another pair or two. It's like an airport landing zone when all the babies start hitting the feeders. As an experiment, we've tried multiple types of fruits and jellies, but our birds are very discriminating; they only like grape jelly. This year a baby Robin started hanging with the baby Orioles. We don't know how he came to be with them or if he was orphaned; he was not fully feathered when we first spotted him and never saw adult Robins around him. We're in Wichita, KS so the winters can be cold. Now the Orioles have migrated, but the Robin is still coming for jelly. Any suggestions on how to help this guy through the winter?
Has anyone else experienced Orioles adopting a bird of another species? They apparently did not mind having the Robin around as he was always with all the babies. We don't know if he actually nested with them or not.
9/17/2011
It started about a week ago with one male Oriole and two females. I now have today 7 males and 9 females. Maybe they are different birds each day just visiting on their way south. I put out 12 orange halves and 1 pound of purple grapes twice dailey along with grapes jelly, mango halves and a necter feeder. I do like these birds. Teri in Georgetown TX
9/18/2011
I am Central Texas also; yesterday a pair showed up in our persimmon tree. today, we have at least 3 pair. First time I have ever noticed this bird around here. Beautiful!
9/18/2011
I live in San Antonio, TX. On September 10th I put out a hummingbird feeder and had MANY Hummingbirds (at one time I counted 15, I think). On September 14th, I saw a Baltimore Oriole on my feeder! I have never seen one before... I put out oranges the next day and from 9/15 - 9/19 I had AT LEAST 12 (maybe more) Baltimore Orioles in my backyard (male and female). They are BEAUTIFUL! I have been looking forward to seeing them each day, but when I returned home from work this evening, NO Orioles. Even the hummingbirds (except for ONE that I see at my feeder) are gone. I am wondering if they have migrated... all the same day.
