American Flamingo

Few animals rival the flamingo for beauty and grace. While none of the six flamingo species is currently listed as endangered, all are threatened by hunting and habitat destruction. Their biggest threat is human interaction.

The National Zoo is home to a flock of dozens of American flamingos and has a very successful flamingo breeding program in which hand-reared chicks have matured, naturally mated, and reared chicks of their own.

Adopt a flamingo and help support conservation efforts at both the National Zoo's D.C. campus and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia.
